Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much does it cost to spray foam?

HomeGuide's 2026 national range is $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed, with closed-cell at the higher end. Many small jobs have a minimum of $1,000 to $2,000 or more. We give you a written price after measuring.

What are the downsides of closed-cell spray foam?

It costs more per square foot, it is hard to remove later, and it needs careful installation and curing. On a wide-open attic floor, blown-in usually gives the same R-value for less. Closed-cell earns its cost on rim joists, basement walls and tight roof bays.

Which type of spray foam has the highest R-value?

Closed-cell, at about R-5 to R-7 per inch according to HomeGuide, versus R-3.5 to R-3.7 for open-cell. That is why it is used where space is tight.

What R-value should an Overland Park attic have?

The Department of Energy recommends R-60 for an uninsulated attic in Climate Zone 4, which includes Johnson County, or adding R-49 where 3 to 4 inches are already in place. Kansas leaves code adoption to each city, so check with yours for new work.

Does Evergy give a rebate for insulation?

Evergy's 2025 Kansas residential chart lists rebates for air sealing, R-38 ceiling insulation and rim joist insulation, through the program term ending December 31, 2027. Check the current terms before you schedule.

Who manufactures spray foam insulation?

Several large chemical and building-products companies make spray foam systems. What matters more for you is that the installer uses a product suited to the spot, sprays it at the right thickness and lets it cure properly.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Should I seal my attic with spray foam?

If your ducts and equipment are in the attic and the roofline is suitable, it can help. It changes ventilation and moisture details, so we evaluate it case by case.

Is closed-cell or open-cell better for a Kansas basement?

Closed-cell, on the rim and walls, because it slows vapor and does not soak up water.

How long do I need to stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide advises 24 hours or more. We confirm timing for your job.

Does spray foam stop mold?

Foam that keeps warm, damp air off cold surfaces reduces condensation, which helps prevent mold. It does not fix leaks or remove existing mold.

Attic Insulation & Air Sealing Questions

Will attic insulation make my upstairs cooler?

Usually, yes, especially combined with air sealing. Upstairs rooms in two-story homes get much of their summer heat through the ceiling.

What depth is R-49?

Usually 14 to 18 inches of loose fill depending on the product.

Do I need to remove old insulation first?

Not if it is dry and clean. We add on top after sealing.

How long does an attic job take?

Most single-family attics take one day.

Do pull-down attic stairs leak much air?

Yes, an unsealed pull-down stair is one of the biggest single leaks in many homes. An insulated cover fixes most of it.

Basement & Rim Joist Insulation Questions

Is foaming the rim joist worth it?

Yes, it is one of the cheapest ways to warm the floors and stop drafts.

Can I finish my basement right after foaming?

After the foam cures. We tell you when.

Do I need drywall over basement foam?

Usually, in living space. We explain the options.

Does Evergy rebate rim joist insulation?

Its 2025 Kansas chart lists $50 for at least 50 linear feet.

Can you insulate a split-level's middle rim joist?

Sometimes, if it is reachable from an unfinished area. We look and tell you what we can reach.

Should the whole basement wall be insulated?

Ideally, yes, especially if you are finishing. The upper part, near the surface, loses the most heat.

Wall Insulation Questions

Can you insulate walls without removing drywall?

Yes, with dense-pack cellulose through small holes.

Is wall insulation worth it?

In older houses with empty walls, usually yes, especially in rooms with a lot of exterior wall.

Can spray foam go into closed walls?

Some injection foams can. Dense-pack cellulose is more common and usually costs less.

How long does it take?

A day or two for most houses.

Will you damage my siding?

We lift and replace siding carefully. Any piece that cannot be reused is noted before we start.

Does dense-pack settle in walls?

When packed to the right density, it holds its place. Loose blowing in walls can settle, which is why we dense-pack.

Bonus Room & Garage Insulation Questions

Why is the room over my garage so uncomfortable?

It is surrounded by unheated garage and attic space. Sealing and insulating each surface usually fixes it.

Can you insulate the bonus room floor from the garage?

Yes, usually through the garage ceiling.

Will this keep garage fumes out?

Sealing the floor and shared wall closes most paths.

Do you insulate shops in garages?

Yes, sized to how you heat it.

Will the bonus room work make the garage colder?

Slightly, since less house heat leaks into the garage. If you want the garage warmer, insulate its walls and door too.

Do I need to open the garage ceiling?

Often, to fill the floor framing properly. We patch it afterward or leave it ready for your drywall finisher.

Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

Do I need to remove old insulation?

Only if it is wet, soiled, moldy or blocking needed sealing.

How long does removal take?

Usually a day for an attic.

What about vermiculite?

Have it tested before anyone disturbs it.

Can you remove spray foam?

Yes, by hand. It costs more than loose fill.

Is removal ever unnecessary?

Yes. Dry, clean insulation can stay; we add on top after sealing.

Will removal make a mess in my house?

The vacuum hose runs from outside to the attic, and we protect the path. Little or nothing comes through the living space.
